About the talk : International library organizations are most well-known for the venues in which they hold their conferences, but there is much more going on behind the scenes. Several of these associations, frequently considered non-governmental or civil society organizations, work to create change in the way that information is accessed, disseminated, and used throughout the world. With a focus on the development framework that will soon replace the Millennium Development Goals promulgated by the United Nations, I will explore and describe less visible activities, their success or lack of success, and what we might need to do to keep libraries and information science relevant in our information rich world. I will pay particular attention to the work of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and its efforts to get libraries on the development agenda.
About the Speaker : Lynne Rudasill, Associate Professor, University Library, is the Global Studies Librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She also oversees the development of resources and collections in political science, U.N. serial publications, and the European Union Studies Center in her association with the International and Area Studies Library there. Her research is focused on the dynamics of scholarly communication including grey or fugitive literature and the impact and future of open access publications. She has taught courses in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois on social science research and resources as well as teaching in the undergraduate Department of Global Studies. As Chair of the Professional Committee of the IFLA Governing Board she has a deep understanding of the impact of that organization on information policies and sustainable development..
